I choose to use distilled water exclusively in my cold-process soapmaking and avoid tap water for several practical reasons related to consistency and formulation control.
Purity and Consistency
Distilled water is free from dissolved minerals, trace metals, and other contaminants. Using it allows for more consistent and predictable soapmaking results from batch to batch.
Minerals and Soap Performance
Tap water often contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals can interact with soap, contributing to issues like soap scum formation and reduced lather performance.
Chlorine and Chloramines
Many municipal water supplies contain chlorine or chloramines. While safe for drinking, these additives can introduce variables into the soapmaking process and may interfere with optimal saponification.
Hand-cut bars can vary from what you see, depending on the design, making each bar unique.
