Salt bars are soap bars made with a high amount of added salt. Depending on the size of the salt crystals used, the texture of the bar may feel more noticeable or slightly abrasive during use. If you prefer a smoother feel, a traditional soap bar may be a better choice.
Across the internet, many salt bar makers and sellers attribute cosmetic or even medical benefits to their products. While salts have been studied in certain topical and therapeutic contexts, there is limited scientific evidence supporting these claims when it comes to salt bars specifically.
Some research has explored mineral-rich salts, such as Dead Sea salt, in non–soap applications, suggesting potential effects beyond exfoliation, including anti-inflammatory or soothing properties. These effects are often discussed in relation to magnesium and trace minerals and are typically associated with prolonged-contact treatments, not cleansing bars. Even in those contexts, the findings are not definitive and require further study.
Because salt bars are rinse-off products and remain on the skin only briefly, I do not believe they can realistically deliver cosmetic or medical benefits. For that reason, and in keeping with my commitment to evidence-based information, I choose not to make claims about salt bars that go beyond what science can reasonably support.
I still remember what I said to my husband after using my very first salt bar. It wasn’t about how exfoliating it felt—it was all about the lather. I told him, “The lather was to die for.” And it truly was.
That indulgent lather comes from the recipe itself. Salt bars are typically made with a very high percentage of coconut oil—often around 90–95%. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid and is unique among soapmaking oils because it produces soap that can lather even in salt water. The result is an abundance of soft, creamy lather that feels more like washing with whipped cream than with a traditional bar of soap.
That first experience left a strong impression on me, and it’s the reason I return to making salt bars—not for exfoliation claims, but purely for the joy of the lather.
That said, a soap with such a high percentage of coconut oil needs to be carefully balanced. Salt bars are formulated with a higher-than-normal superfat to offset coconut oil’s strong cleansing power. Without that adjustment, the soap could be overly cleansing and strip away too much of the skin’s natural oils, leading to dryness.
When properly formulated, however, salt bars offer a uniquely luxurious lathering experience that stands apart from other types of soap
Hand-cut bars can vary from what you see, depending on the design, making each bar unique.
